Some of it doesn’t even appear until the Appendices, the additional chapters of pure lore and world-building that are included at the end of The Return of the King. It's never quite laid out this succinctly and directly. While the story this prologue tells is faithful to Tolkien’s writing, much of the material is introduced and explained at numerous points throughout the books. It’s a convenient and easy-to-follow explanation that sets up the story, but it’s one that is not present in Tolkien’s novel. ![]() It provides an explanation of the Rings of Power, shows how Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand, and even goes as far to depict how Bilbo Baggins came into possession of the Ring in Gollum’s cave. The prologue of The Fellowship of the Ringshows the first war against the Dark Lord Sauron at the end of the Second Age of Middle-Earth.
